Smell Me What’s On Your Mind

I’ve never believed that smell is the sense most closely tied to memory, but today my nose took me to 1305 Wilson Avenue and 70276 S. Nottawa – both of my childhood homes where the warm smell of cooked rice radiated off the walls. It enveloped my body and amplified the fall chill forming outside. I love it. As much as I hate being cold, I love the need to bundle up and wear the same pair of jeans until spring. I love making my hats feel needed an my jackets feel loved. Does anyone else get so sentimental about the seasons? or rice?

Fall makes me wish I could stay home all day and bake pies and cakes and cookies, all flavored like the candles in glass jars with edible names like Brown Sugar& Fig or Cranberry Chutney. I guess it comes from the primal urge to fatten up for the cold months making itself known.

Speaking of instincts (and I know I’m obsessed with this topic because, for some reason it seems so hard for me to follow mine) how many of you honestly follow yours? Let’s take a poll!

With Love to Mama and Papa

I’d like to send out a big internet shout out to my parents, today celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary! Congratulations Papa Smurf and Marmee!

——————————————————————-

I hate that feeling that I’m off balance. Anything can cause it, and it’s sometimes difficult to figure out how to right yourself. I’ve admittedly been off balance for the past couple of months. You can attribute it to my recent move, to adjusting to a new job and lifestyle, to a change in altitude and attitude. But it’s not just that. It’s been caused by a case of self-neglect, which is so easy to succumb to. How do you take care of yourself? Do you eat all organic and exercise for an hour every day? Do you take a bubble bath and paint your toes? I don’t have any typical rituals, but it always seems that I can re-coop with a good Sunday morning breakfast and coffee on the balcony. It really is the simple things that can get you back to your right self. Then again, that alarm clock goes off on Monday at 6:00am and suddenly all of that weekend relaxation is forgotten. How do you keep that weekend state of mind all week? I guess if someone had figured that out they would’ve written a book about it and made it a magical method.

Other than that, my Wisconsin family has been growing. My brother-in-law Marc has now moved to Mad Town and we’re rolling 4 strong, representing the Sturgis crew. It’s exciting and comforting to have ready-made friends in town since my own friend-finding instincts have been toned down lately. Knowing that I have my best, lifelong friends in Steamboat and my family close by, the need for new friends doesn’t seem to exist. Not that I’m not trying to be friendly and open to people, but that desperation to not be alone in a new town isn’t so pressing. Then again, if you’re reading this and you are not yet my friend, drop me an email or call me up. I’m open for knitting rings, book clubs, cooking circles…heh.
